How late fees work

A late fee is a contractual charge agreed upon between a service provider and a client when an invoice remains unpaid past its agreed payment terms.

Payment terms define the due date: for example, Net 30 means payment is due 30 calendar days from the invoice issue date. A grace period provides additional calendar days after the due date before late fees start to accrue.

Late fees are commonly calculated either as a flat fee or as a monthly percentage (often 1.5% per month, equivalent to approximately 18% annual interest). When calculated as a percentage, the accrued amount is typically pro-rated across the exact number of days late. Local regulations and commercial agreements determine applicable fee limits and terms.
